Summary:System and method for automatic payment or pre-payment of tolls via smartphone. The smartphone (1) comprises a downloaded mobile toll paying application or App (12). A toll reading device (2) with a license plate reader (21) that is configured to exchange data with said smartphone via a DSRC or GNSS communication protocol. A subsystem or back office (5) of the toll provider with data on the car and the bank details of clients receives data from the license plate reader and the smartphone. A virtual payment gateway (8) has a common electronic communication protocol between said App and said toll provider's subsystem. The subsystem or back office executes the payments through said virtual payment gateway according to the data of a prior plan selected through the App and/or the data from the toll reader.
