The invention relates to a packaging method and to a packaging apparatus (1) for the packaging or outer packaging (25) of article groups (22). In the method, articles (23) are transferred into outer packaging units (25) moving in succession along a conveyor path (30) in a transport direction (TR), which outer packaging units (25) each accommodate at least one article group (22) formed from multiple articles (23) and inserted together into each outer packaging unit (25). The outer packaging units (25) are moved along the conveyor path (30) continuously and largely without spacing and, before reaching a loading region (5), which adjoins the conveyor path (30) or forms a portion of the conveyor path (30) and in which the outer packaging units (25) each receive the article groups (22), at least pairs of or groups of multiple outer packaging units (25) moving in succession are spaced apart from one another in the transport direction (TR). The two, three or more outer packaging units (25) spaced apart from one another are then brought into the loading region (5) together, maintaining the spacing in the transport direction (TR) between them and are each loaded with article groups (22) there.
