A PCR test module (100) includes a housing having a PCR instrument (106) disposed therein; a sample input station (104) on the housing, where the sample input station is configured to receive a sample collection device (SCD), the sample collection device (SCD) comprising a biological sample provided by a patient; an SCD processing mechanism configured to transfer the lysed trace portion of the biological sample sample into a PCR sample tube (308, 507, 1104, 1204, 1302) attached to the SCD; at least one mechanism configured to separate a PCR sample tube (308, 507, 1104, 1204, 1302) from the SCD and to transfer the PCR sample tube to a PCR instrument (106); and a controller configured to (i) perform a PCR test on the contents of the PCR sample tubes (308, 507, 1104, 1204, 1302) using the PCR instrument (106), and (ii) generate a result of the PCR test.
