Summary:An encoding apparatus (110) for compression of a point cloud (100) is disclosed. The encoding apparatus (110) is configured to partition the multi-dimensional space into a plurality of cells, wherein each cell defines a primary reference position and at least one secondary reference position, and to determine for each point (101) of the point cloud (100) a refinement vector, wherein the refinement vector defines depending on the position of the point (101) the difference between the position of the point (101) and the primary reference position or the at least one secondary reference position. The encoding apparatus (110) is further configured to encode the point cloud (100) by encoding for each point (101) depending on its position an identifier of the primary reference position or the at least one secondary reference position and the refinement vector. Moreover, a corresponding decoding apparatus (130) is disclosed.
