Summary:The present invention provides a filter module comprising: one or more membrane cartridges, each membrane cartridge comprising a plurality of filter units adapted for use in a membrane bioreactor; and a frame structure providing a receiving space to receive the one or more membrane cartridges. Each filter unit comprises at least one filtration membrane pleated to form alternating crests and valleys, and is arranged in two layers which are sealed to define an enclosed permeate space therebetween, wherein two valleys and a crest, or two crests and a valley, of a layer form permeate channels in the permeate space, the permeate channels having an axis along the channel length, the permeate channels being enclosed at both axial ends of the channels, the enclosed axial ends and the two sealed layers enclosing the permeate space. At least one spacer element is provided on a layer of the filtration membrane, the spacer element extending and contacting at least some of the crests or valleys of the layer, thereby supporting the pleated structure of the layer. There is also provided a membrane bioreactor and a use of the disclosed filter module in a membrane bioreactor.
