Subject matter of the invention is an apparatus for mounting on a vehicle roof (41), comprising a housing (14) which encloses at least one display (31, 34), and a mounting fixture (13) configured to support the housing (14). The mounting fixture (13) comprises a carrier (15) being attachable to the roof (41) and a damping unit (16) which connects the carrier (15) to the housing (14). The damping unit (16) is configured to allow movement of the housing (14) relative to the carrier (15) against a restoring force. Furthermore, the invention is directed to a kit comprising the inventive apparatus and at least one attachment bracket (70) for fixing the carrier (15) to a roof rack of the vehicle (40). The invention allows a reliable operation of delicate electronic components such as a control unit for driving the display, data communication equipment, data storage devices, and sensors for the collection of traffic data, environmental data (such as temperature data and/or humidity data), geographic position data and/or demographic data (such as the age and/or gender of pedestrians in the vicinity of the inventive apparatus). Based on the collected sensor data the content which is displayed on the inventive apparatus may be controlled.
