This application provides a near field estimation method and apparatus. The method is applied to a multiple-input multiple-output MIMO radar. An antenna array of the MIMO radar includes M transmit antennas and N receive antennas, M is a positive integer, and N is a positive integer. The method includes: measuring a first distance between a reference receive antenna and a target, where the reference receive antenna is one of the N receive antennas; determining a second distance between a jth receive antenna and the target based on the first distance, where j is a positive integer less than or equal to N; determining a wave path difference between a first virtual receive antenna and a second virtual receive antenna based on the first distance and the second distance, where the first virtual receive antenna is determined based on a reference transmit antenna and the reference receive antenna, the reference transmit antenna is one of the M transmit antennas, the second virtual receive antenna is determined based on an ith transmit antenna and the jth receive antenna, and i is a positive integer less than or equal to M; and determining an angle of arrival of the first virtual receive antenna based on the wave path difference.
