The disclosure relates to a method of providing an alert for a user by a hearing device configured to be worn at an ear of the user, the method comprising providing user-related data (421) including information about the user and/or an ambient environment of the user and/or a property of the hearing device worn by the user. The disclosure also relates to a hearing system and a hearing device for operating the method, and a computer-readable medium storing instructions for performing the method.To allow controlling the alert operation in a convenient way, for instance to balance the user's interests of reliably becoming alerted and of not being annoyed by too many alerts, the method further comprises providing vehicle-related data (422, 522) associated with at least one vehicle in a vicinity of the user, the vehicle-related data including information about a property of the vehicle; determining, based on the user-related data (421) and the vehicle-related data (422, 522), a relevance measure indicative of a probability that the user is endangered by the vehicle; and controlling an operation of the hearing device (100) depending on the relevance measure, the operation alerting the user about the vehicle.
