Summary:In a marine propulsion apparatus 18 that transmits power of at least one of an internal combustion engine (ICE) 16 and a generator motor (GM) 30 mounted on a ship 1 to a propeller 5 via a forward reverse switching mechanism 25, the marine propulsion apparatus 18 can be downsized as a whole. The marine propulsion apparatus 18 includes a connection switching mechanism 37 capable of selectively connecting the GM 30 to an upstream side 24a and a downstream side 24b of the power transmission from the ICE 16 in the forward reverse switching mechanism 25. Then, the forward reverse switching mechanism 25 is interposed between the ICE 16 and the connection switching mechanism 37, and a large torque from the ICE 16 is not directly transmitted to the connection switching mechanism 37. As a result, it is not necessary to increase the capacity of the connection switching mechanism 37, and the connection switching mechanism 37 and thus the marine propulsion apparatus 18 can be downsized.
