The invention relates to a method for the direct reduction of oxidic iron carrier particles, wherein firstly a feed material is provided under heating of an oxidic iron carrier particle raw material to a temperature of at least 400°C and under oxidation of at least a partial quantity of the oxidic iron carrier particle raw material until at least 85% of the iron Fe with an oxidation number +3 is present.
