Summary:The present disclosure relates to a humidifier configured to humidify a flow of breathable gas at a target humidity, comprising a porous heating element made of thermally conductive material configured to substantially vaporise liquid that is passed therethrough, a portion of the porous heating element being isolated from the flow of breathable gas, a water supply unit and a controller. The controller is configured to determine an ambient humidity, calculate an amount of liquid to be added to the flow of breathable gas based on the determined ambient humidity and the target humidity, calculate an amount of energy required to vaporise the amount of liquid, control the water supply unit to deliver the amount of liquid to the porous heating element, and energise the porous heating element with the amount of energy to vaporise the amount of liquid. The present disclosure also relates to a corresponding method of humidifying a supply of air for a patient.
