The invention relates to a household appliance (1) with at least one component (3) which is supplied with water during operation of the household appliance (1). The household appliance (1) comprises a detection device (7) configured to detect a presence of limescale on at least one surface (6) of the at least one component (3). The detection device (7) comprises a first electrode and a second electrode, a measuring unit (11) configured to measure a first electrical quantity of the electrodes (8) at at least one frequency of an alternating second electrical quantity applied to the electrodes (8), and an evaluation unit (12) configured to determine an impedance of the electrodes (8) based on the measured first electrical quantity and configured to deduce the presence of limescale based on the determined impedance. The invention further relates to a method for operating such a household appliance (1).
