Summary:The present disclosure is related to a lab-on-a-chip device and method for in-situ and in-vivo identification and quantification of phytoplankton cell comprising: an inlet and an outlet; a constriction microchannel that allows the passage of one single cell through the microchannel; and at least four measurement lines configured to identify and quantify a pre-defined phytoplankton cell, wherein each line comprises: one light source, preferably LEDs or laser; at least three photodiodes; wherein at least 2 photodiodes are different and wherein the three photodiodes are selected from a fluorescence photodiode, scattering photodiode, and transmission photodiode; and at least one optical filter, wherein the optical filter is aligned with the fluorescent photodiode; wherein the scattering photodiode, and fluorescence photodiode are not aligned with the source light.
