The invention relates to a method for operating a machine (1) of the tobacco processing industry or a machine for producing straws. The machine (1) comprises at least one rod-making machine (2) of thetobacco processing industry or of the straw industry, wherein a rod (11) is first produced and the rod (11) is dimensioned into a plurality of rod-shaped products (10) or straws of the tobacco processing industry. The invention is characterised in that the length (1) of the rod-shaped products (10) is subsequently measured during the continuous operation of the machine (1), and in that an operating parameter of the rod-shaped products (10), which influences the length (1) of the rod-shaped products (10), is controlled or regulated on the basis of the measured value of the length (1) of the rod-shaped products (10). Furthermore, the invention relates to a corresponding machine (1) for producing rod-shaped products in the tobacco processing industry or in the straw industry, which is suitable for carrying out said method.
