Summary:The invention proposes a sensor element (110) for determining particles in a fluid medium, in particular for use in an exhaust gas system of a motor vehicle. The sensor element (110) comprises an electrode system (120) having at least one first electrode (122) and at least one second electrode (124), wherein the first electrode (122) and the second electrode (124) are arranged in such a way that deposition of particles can be detected by measuring a change in a resistance between the first electrode (122) and the second electrode (124). The electrode system (120) further has at least one flat electrode (130) which is arranged separately from the fluid medium.
