Summary:A gear engagement device (1) for a motor-vehicle gearbox comprises a gearbox shaft (2), a gear wheel (R1,R2) freely rotatably mounted on the shaft (2), a hub (H) rigidly connected in rotation to the hub (2), a gear engagement sleeve (S) connected in rotation to the hub (H). The sleeve (S) is axially movable relative to the hub (H) from a neutral position towards a gear engagement position in which an auxiliary toothed crown (C1, C2) carried by the gear wheel (R1, R2) is in engagement with an inner toothed crown (S1) of the sleeve (S) so as to connect in rotation the gear wheel (R1, R2) to the shaft (2). The gear engagement device (1) further comprises a synchronizer ring (Y1, Y2) connected in rotation to the hub and cooperating with a conical portion (X1, X2) of the gear wheel (R1, R2). The device (1) is configured so that in the gear engagement position a conical surface (W1, W2) of the synchronizer ring (Y1, Y2) or a surface (S3, S4) of the sleeve (S) are axially pressed in friction contact against said conical portion of the gear wheel (R1, R2) or against a respective engagement surface (R1A, R2A) of the gear wheel (R1, R2), respectively, so that this friction contact tends to brake any relative rotations between the gear wheel (R1, R2) and the synchronizer ring (Y1, Y2) or between the gear wheel and the sleeve (S).
