The invention proposes a method for operating a domestic dishwasher (1) within the context of a dishwashing program, wherein the dishwashing program comprises a sub-program step, in particular cleaning step, during which washable items (3) arranged in an accommodating chamber (2) of the domestic dishwasher (1) are subjected to the action of heated dishwashing liquor, and wherein the dishwashing program comprises at least one drying step, which comes at a later point in time than the sub-program step, in particular cleaning step, and during which air flows into the accommodating chamber (2), absorbs moisture there from the items (3), in order to dry the latter, and finally leaves the domestic dishwasher (1). According to the invention, the domestic dishwasher (1) comprises a heat exchanger (4), with a heat-accumulator medium (5), and also a heat-pump arrangement (6). Heat is extracted from the heat-accumulator medium (5), with the aid of the heat-pump arrangement (6), before and/or during the drying step, wherein air is directed through the heat exchanger (4) during the drying step and before it is discharged to the surroundings of the domestic dishwasher (1), and wherein heat is extracted from the water vapour entrained by the air in the region of the heat exchanger (4) and said heat is transmitted, in turn, to the heat-accumulating medium (5), and therefore the water vapour, in the region of the heat exchanger (4), is at least partially condensed.
