A method and an apparatus for forming a butt joint between ends of a first and a second ply (211, 212) and splicing the first and second ply (211, 212) together is dislosed. The method comprises positioning a first splice edge (221) of a first ply (211) at a first location; positioning a second splice edge (222) of a second ply (212) at a second location; wrapping a gum strip (244) around the first splice edge (221) to form a U-shaped structure; not wrapping a gum strip around the second splice edge (222); placing the first splice edge (221) in abutting relationship to the second splice edge (222); stitching the first splice edge (221) to the second splice edge (222) such that stitches (255) each extend from a first planar side of the first ply (211). The invention also relates to a continuous material ply.
