An absorbent core (28) comprising a core wrap having a top layer (16) and a bottom layer (16') enclosing an absorbent layer comprising superabsorbent polymer, wherein the absorbent core is substantially free of cellulose fibers. The absorbent layer comprises a non-rectangular central portion (60) having a front edge (600), a back edge (602) and two longitudinally-extending side edges (604, 606), wherein each side edge defines a recess along a portion of its length; a first side portion (61) present in one of the recess and a second side portion (62) present in the other recess, wherein each side portion comprises a proximal edge (610, 620) relative to the central portion and a distal edge (611, 621) further away from the central portion. The proximal edges (610, 620) of the side portions are convex; and either the distal edges of the side portions are concave so that the side portions are crescent-shaped; or the distal edges of the side portions is straight, and optionally flush with the side edges of the central layer outside the portion of the longitudinal edge defining the recesses. The absorbent core further comprises a first folding guide (261) between the first side portion and the central portion, and a second folding guide (262), and when the absorbent core is folded along the folding guides, the central portion and the side portions form a three-dimensional basin.
