Summary:The invention relates to a method for determining an exciter current profile for the exciter current (IErr) through an exciter winding (4) and phase current profiles for the phase currents (lu, lv. Iw) through phases (3) of an electrically excited electrical machine (2), comprising a current measuring device (10) in a supply line (9) for the phases (3) and the exciter winding (4), the method comprising the following steps: - multiple measurement of a measuring current that corresponds to the sum of one or more of the phase currents (lu, lv, Iw) and/or the exciter current (lErr) at different current states in order to obtain a measuring current profile, wherein the current states are predefined by circuit patterns indicating which of the phases (3) and which exciter winding (4) are under current at a certain point in time; - providing a specific system of equations with several equations on the basis of a current balance at the current measuring device (10) and at different current states; - determining the exciter current profile and the phase current profiles by solving the system of equations.
