Summary:Producing a coating made of metal or a metal alloy on a substrate (1) using a diffusion process, comprises heat treating the substrate in an atmosphere (4) including at least one metal halide of the to-be-deposited metal or the metal alloy, where the substrate is provided at least partially with a layer including at least one metal halide in solid and/or liquid form. An independent claim is included for a chromium coat, produced by the above method, on a metallic substrate with a diffusion zone in the substrate and a build-up zone on the substrate, where the build-up zone has a chromium proportion of >= 30 wt.%.
