Summary:The method involves determining position of code elements in a region of sensor arrays (S1-S4, 1) i.e. complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) array, where the elements are distinguishable by radiations. A value of the sensor arrays is read from sensor elements. A position of a code on a rotary body (2) and a linear code carrier is determined based on the value by averaging. The arrays are read twice by reading devices in opposing directions or a pair of sensors is read by array-specific reading devices relative to moving direction of the body and the carrier in the opposing directions. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining a position of a code on a rotary body and a linear code carrier relative to a sensor element.
