Summary:Methods and apparatus are provided for requesting uplink Bandwidth (BW) over a BW Request (REQ) channel in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) communication system. A BW REQ indicator is transmitted with a BW REQ message over the BW REQ channel from a Mobile Station (MS) to a Base Station (BS) to request an uplink resource for uplink traffic of a delay sensitive service. A grant of the requested uplink resource is received from the BS in accordance with the transmitted BW REQ indicator and the BW REQ message. The uplink traffic is transmitted from the MS to the BS using the granted uplink resource.
