Summary:The aim of the invention is to provide a use of a catalyst for removing tar substances from raw synthesis gasses, characterized by an improved selectivity with regard to a total oxidation. The aim is attained by the use of powder transition metal oxides as transition metal oxide catalysts for the selective oxidation of tar substances in synthesis gasses having molecular oxygen, wherein a basic substance is mixed into the transition metal oxide catalyst.
