The system (1) has an input unit (3) for activating the system. The system uses map data for control, route calculation and/or route guidance. An emission value is estimated based on the map data and/or inputted data of a vehicle. The inputted data contain data of a drive motor, weight of the vehicle, fuel type and/or fuel consumption. The estimated value is displayed on a screen (2). The estimated emission value is a momentary emission value or an emission value that is cumulated over a predetermined route. The predetermined route is a route that is assigned to a predetermined destination. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a driver information system. Die Erfindung betrifft ein Fahrerinformationssystem (1), wie insbesondere Navigationssystem, bei welchem Kartendaten zur Steuerung und/oder zur Routenberechnung und/oder zur Zielführung verwendet werden, wobei aufgrund von Kartendaten und/oder eingebbaren Daten insbesondere eines Fahrzeugs ein Emissionswert bestimmbar ist.
