Summary:According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a photoelectric encoder including: a scale; a light source irradiating a measurement light onto the scale; a light receiving unit receiving the measurement light reflected or transmitted by the scale; and a signal processing circuit processing a light receiving signal of the light receiving unit and detecting an absolute position of the scale, wherein the scale is configured to be relatively movable to the light source and the light receiving unit in a measuring direction, and includes a modulation incremental track that includes a modulation incremental pattern having a plurality of modulation scale patterns arranged thereon, and the modulation incremental pattern is formed so that a shape or a pitch of the modulation scale patterns changes periodically in the measuring direction within a first period.
