Summary:An organometallic transition metal compound is new. An organometallic transition metal compound of formula Z 1(A) nZ 2M(X) m (I) is new. Z 1a coordinating group having a six-pi -electron central group which coordinates directly to M and which bears at least one fused-on saturated or unsaturated 2-30C ring system containing at least one heteroatom of the elements B, Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn, O, S, Se, Te, N, P, As or Sb in the ring (where the heteroatom is bound directly to a carbon atom of the six-pi -electron-containing central group and the heteroatom may also bear radicals which are not constituents of the ring); A : a divalent bridge between Z 1 and Z 2; Z 2Z 1 or a group comprising an open pentadienyl, cyclopentadienyl-containing group or heterocyclic, 5- or 6-membered group containing six pi electrons; n : 0 or 1; M : element of group 3, 4, 5 or 6 of the Periodic Table of the Elements, or an element of the lanthanides; X : organic or inorganic radical; m : 0 - 2. With two radicals X is also joined to one another. At least one of the three molecule fragments Z 1, Z 2 and A bears a monovalent organic radical which contains at least one olefinic C=C double bond and has 2 - 40 carbon atoms. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a ligand system (s1) of formula (A) n'(Z 1-H)(Z 2-H) (III), or (IV) or its double bond isomers; (2) a catalyst system (s2) for the polymerization of olefins comprising at least one organometallic transition metal compound (I) and at least one cocatalyst which is able to convert the organometallic transition metal compound into a species which displays polymerization activity toward at least one olefin; (3) preparing polyolefins by polymerization or copolymerization of at least one olefin in the presence of at least one (s2); and (4) preparing an organometallic transition metal compound, involving reacting (s1) or a bisanion prepared from it, with a transition metal compound. n' : 1.
