Apparatus and method for reducing shear loading on elements connecting an axle and a chassis of a vehicle

An apparatus and method for mounting or assembling an axle (34,36) or axle housing and a chassis (20,22) of a vehicle (10), which improves fit-up between a chassis (20,22) and axle (34,36) and reduces shear loads exerted against connectors (104,102,100) such as bolts or the like connecting the axle...

Summary:An apparatus and method for mounting or assembling an axle (34,36) or axle housing and a chassis (20,22) of a vehicle (10), which improves fit-up between a chassis (20,22) and axle (34,36) and reduces shear loads exerted against connectors (104,102,100) such as bolts or the like connecting the axle (34,36) and chassis (20,22). The chassis (20,22) and axle (34,36) are connected and fixed in relation one to the other in the desired position by the connectors (104,102,100). Wedge surfaces (70,88) are located on the chassis (20,22) and on the axle (34,36) in opposing relation at a predetermined angle and define a space therebetween. A tapered block (106) or wedge member is positionable in the space between the wedge surfaces (70,88). An adjusting member (116) is adjustable for applying forces against the wedge surfaces (70,88) to urge the wedge surfaces (70,88) apart, for reducing at least some of any shear forces acting against the connectors (104,102,100) connecting the axle (34,36) and chassis (20,22).
