Summary: | A method and an apparatus for locking a pneumatic tire carcass ply between a bead pocket (112) of an annular bead lock mechanism (102) and a bead ring (150) in a way that clamps all ply reinforcement cords between the bead pocket (112) and the bead with a uniform clamping pressure is disclosed. The bead lock mechanism (102) is expandable from a retracted radius (RR) to a larger expanded radius (RE) by simultaneous radial movement of a plurality of bead lock segments (110) each of which have circumferentially extending fingers (116, 118) that are axially staggered such that the fingers of circumferentially adjacent bead lock segments (110) are interlaced when the bead lock mechanism (102) is expanded to the expanded radius (RE). |
