Metal complexes (Ia) with at least one ligand of formula (I); [Image] D : a 5-membered, quasi-aromatic heterocyclic residue, other than optionally substituted thiazol-2-yl, benzthiazol-2-yl, benzoxazol-2-yl, benzimidazol-2-yl or 1,3,4-triazol-2-yl when x is 1 and R 2>is optionally substituted 6-10C aryl; x : 0 or 1; R 2>6-10C aryl, (6-10C aryl)-vinyl, (6-10C aryl)-ethynyl, (6-10C aryl)-butadienyl or a 5- or 6-membered aromatic or quasi-aromatic heterocyclic residue (all optionally substituted); R 3>, R 4>1-6C alkyl, 7-10C aralkyl or 6-10C aryl (all optionally substituted), or NR 3>R 4>may be a pyrrolidino, piperidino, morpholino, piperazino or N-(1-6C alkyl)-piperidino group; R 5>H, Cl, methyl or methoxy, or R 3>and R 5>together may form a -(CH 2) 2-, -(CH 2) 3- or -(CH 2) 2O- bridge. Independent claims are also included for: (1) azo compounds of formula (Ib); (2) a method for the production of (Ia) by reacting metal salts with (Ib); (3) coupling components of formula (VII); (4) a method (M1) for the production of (VII) by reacting corresponding m-phenylenediamines with sulfonic or sulfinic acid halides of formula Z-S(R 2>)(O)(O) x(IX); (5) solutions containing at least 1 wt.% (Ia) in 2,2,3,3-tetra-fluoropropanol, propanol, butanol, pentanol, hexanol, diacetone alcohol, dibutyl ether and/or heptanone; (6) optical data carriers which can be written and read with blue or red light (preferably laser light), in which (Ia) are used as light-absorbing compounds in the information layer; and (7) a method (M2) for the production of optical data carriers as above by coating a preferably transparent substrate (optionally already coated with a reflective layer) with (Ia) (optionally in combination with binders, additives and solvents) and then optionally adding a reflective layer, other interlayers, protective layers, further substrates and/or covering layers [Image] Z : F, Cl, Br or I.
