Summary:Negatively charged phospholipids, as well as compositions including negatively charged phospholipids and possibly carotenoids and/or antioxidants, for treating the eye are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, a composition comprising at least one negatively charged phospholipid except cardiolipin is used to treat age-related macular degeneration. Methods for producing the negatively charged phospholipids, as well as methods for producing the compositions including negatively charged phospholipids and possibly carotenoids and/or antioxidants for treating age-related macular degeneration, are also disclosed.
