The use of 4,4'-bis-(quaternary ammonio-methyl)-biphenyl compounds (I) as antimicrobial agents, disinfectants or preservatives is new. Some compounds (I) are new. The use of diquaternary ammonium compounds of formula (I) as antimicrobial agents, disinfectants or preservatives is new. R1 = 5-16C alkyl, phenyl or phenyl-(1-10C) alkyl; R2, R3, R5, R6 = 1-4C alkyl; R4 = 4-16C alkyl, phenyl or phenyl-(1-10C)alkyl; and A<-> = monovalent anion. Independent claims are included for: (a) (I) as new compounds, provided that (i) R1 is other than 4C alkyl and (ii) compounds (I; R1, R4 = benzyl; R1 - R4 = all methyl or all n-propyl; A = Cl or Br) are excluded; and (b) the preparation of the new compounds (I).
