Summary:A chemical composition and vaginal sponge for introduction into the vaginal canal. The chemical composition has spermidicidal, bactericidal and virucidal activity, and when introduced into the vaginal canal, e.g. by a vaginal sponge, reduces or prevents the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Preferred compositions include nonoxynol-9 and polyethylene oxide; or, nonoxynol-9 and chlorhexidine digluconate; or, nonoxynol-9, chlorhexidine digluconate, and polyethylene oxide.
