Die Erfindung betrifft bicyclische Aldehyde und Ketone der Formel I worin: n = 1, 2; und: R ,R = H oder CH3; und: R , R = H, CH3 oder CH2CH3 darstellen, die Verwendung der Verbindungen als Riechstoffe und für Riechstoffkompositionen und ein Verfahren zur Herstellung der R -methylsubstituierten Verbindungen mit brückenkopfständiger Doppelbindung sowie Zwischenprodukte. Bicyclic aldehydes or ketones optionally having their six-membered ring substituted by methyl or ethyl groups are claimed as novel compounds, as are also certain starting materials used in their preparation. DETAILED DISCLOSURE - Novel bicyclic aldehydes or ketones are of formula (I) where the dotted line indicates a double bond between the bridgehead atoms or between bridgehead atom 1 and ring atom 11 or 12 n = 1 or 2; R and R = H or Me; and R and R = H, Me or Et Independent claims are also included for: (a) 14 specific compounds of formula (I); (b) preparation of (I); and (c) the novel compounds 4-methylenespiro(2,6)nonane and 4-methylenespiro(2,7)decane which are used as starting materials in the preparation of (I).
