Summary: | Temperature monitoring of an internal combustion engine exhaust system, having a cooling loop, is performed after adjusting a cooling area control shut-off valve to a predetermined value at specified engine operating conditions. A method of temperature monitoring of an internal combustion engine exhaust system, having a cooling loop, a catalytic converter, a nitrogen oxide (NOX) trap and a shut-off valve for cooling surface area control, comprises adjusting the shut-off valve to a predetermined value at specified engine operating conditions and measuring the temperature in the exhaust gas system for comparison with a target value. Preferred Features: The temperature at the catalytic converter outlet and at the NOX trap are determined and compared with target values. This may be carried out by continuously forming a difference function from the temperatures for comparison with a target value function or by forming a temperature difference at specific times, determined by the engine operating conditions, for comparison with a target value. The target value is fixed with respect to the engine speed and/or load, the vehicle speed, the ambient temperature and / or the air / fuel ratio. |
