Summary:A method to inhibit coke formation on heat transfer surfaces used to heat or cool a petroleum feedstock at coke-forming conditions is disclosed. The heat transfer surfaces are treated with an effective amount of phosphonate to inhibit coke formation on the heat transfer surfaces, the phosphonate being of the formula (R'Y)2P(X)R", wherein X and Y are O or S and R' and R" are hydrocarbyl or heteroatom-containing, with the proviso that the hetero atom is not directly bonded to the phosphorus atom.
