Summary:Liq. pig iron or steel is produced by adding iron ore in pieces or pellets together with additive into a redn. zone (12) where sponge iron is produced which is then fed into melting zone (8) with carbon and O2-contg. gas. A CO-contg. and H2-contg. redn. gas is produced and passed back to the redn. zone (12) where it is converted to an export gas which is drawn off and subjected to a CO2 eliminating process before being passed to a further redn. zone (21) for direct redn. of more iron ore. A part of the redn. gas produced in the zone (8) is drawn off and fed directly to the zone (21), by-passing the CO2 elimination stage. The plant for carrying out this process is also claimed.
