The gripper (70) is fitted to ne end of the workpiece support (62) which in turn moves to and fro on the carriage (50) to give a support swivel range between a forward slightly raised position and a rear end setting pointed steeply downwards. A turret type housing (34) above the working space (30) of the lathe etc., (10) is fitted with a flap (36) on the side facing the workpiece magazine (44). The drive (58) used to move the carriage along the guide (40) and the co-ordinated swivel movement of the support (62) can be controlled so that with the flap (36) open, the support (62) gradually descends from its raised forward setting to reach steeply into the space (30). As it rides into the space, so the support slopes forwards and downwards. The support thus swings away from the machine (10) through its vertical setting between magazine and machine, giving a support swivel angle of 70-80 deg. in both raised and lowered directions. The guide (40) should terminate short of the turret (34), the flap (36) so controlled by the carriage movement as to open (36) into the turret before the support reaches this and to close (36) as the support withdraws.
