Summary:An apparatus for measuring the amount of earth on agricultural crops, such as beets, on the basis of an absorption measurement of gamma -rays of different energies. The apparatus utilizes that high-energy radiation is absorbed to an equal extent by earth and beets, whereas low-energy radiation is most absorbed by earth, minerals, and stones and less absorbed by organic material and water. The apparatus comprises two probes in form of tubes (1, 2) which can be inserted in a layer of beets, one probe comprising gamma -radiation sources and the other probe comprising detectors. In this manner a fast and accurate measurement of the earth content in a cartload of beets is rendered possible.
