(II) contains 1 or 2 aldehyde gps., hemi-acetal gps. or complete acetal gps.. An aldehyde/acetal mixt. with 1-99% aldehyde content may also be used. Also claimed is the prodn. of (I) from a cpd. (III) with at least one olefinic double bond. The process comprises reacting a soln. of (III) with ozone; hydrating the peroxide soln. obtained, removing solvent and catalyst; and oxidising the aldehyde obtained as above.
