Summary: | A process for producing a diol by esterifying a carboxylic acid mixture, separated from a liquid reaction mixture resulting from liquid-phase air oxidation of cyclohexane, with an alcohol and hydrogenolyzing the obtained ester, wherein the hydrogenolysis is conducted by using a catalytic mixture which is composed of a catalyst (A) mainly comprising copper oxide and zinc oxide and a catalyst (B) comprising copper oxide and iron oxide both supported on aluminum oxide, does not contain chromium, has a high activity and can readily be separated by filtration, and the used catalytic mixture is separated from the hydrogenolysis reaction mixture by filtration. |
