Summary:The invention has been newly deviced in relation to a sliding member of less wear and low coefficient of friction, particularly to a structure of a sliding surface of a sliding parts for a sliding shaft and a counter sliding bearing. For the aimed purpose, the inventors have found that the surface of the sliding shaft, when provided with random irregularity of surface roughness of 0.2 to 20 mu m or lower (by JIS, Rz indication), has favourable performance in comparison with the conventional directional irregularity or a plain face as a mirror surface. Also, a sliding surface on the bearing, when provided with two-dimensionally random irregularity of roughness defined by Rz values of 20 to 500 mu m or a pattern of small and independent recesses and/or protuberances of 20 mu m or more in depth, can exhibit the same effect as of the above. The shaft or bearing having the above structure has durability in dry and long use to be effectively applicable to precision machines, particularly, copying machines and a sliding device for use at high and low temperature housed in nuclear or cosmic apparatuses.
