Summary: | A machine produces seating components consisting of a foam pad with at least one shaped surface and a shaped cover member by utilising track-mounted press centres (10). Press centre (10) consists of a frame (12), fixed press platen (22) and moveable press platen (28) which moves vertically on slide (32) under control of motor (34) and drive screw (36). Platen (28) rotates on shaft (40) by motor drive means (46). A trim tool (24) is mounted on fixed platen (22). Moveable platen (28) carries a form tool (48) and mounting fixture (50) with foam pad seating component (52). In generally known manner, a seating component is produced by forming a cover member (26) on trim tool (24) with form tool (48), then rotating platen (28) on axis (40) to apply the adhesive-coated foam pad (52) to the shaped cover member. Press centre (10) is suspended by wheel assemblies (16) from a parallel pair of I-beams (14) which form a track (60) along which centres (10) may be moved by motor drive means (18, 20). Track (60) enables press centre (10) to visit workstations (62, 64, 66, 76, 78, 82, 90, 92, 94, 98) and transfer stations (68, 74, 84, 86). Stages in the mfr. of seating components take place at the workstations. Transfer stations (68, 74) are used to selectively bypass any workstations not required for a particular component, and transfer stations (84, 86) enable press centres (10) to be moved off-line to maintenance station (88). |
