Summary:(6S)-THF is obtained by adding acid in portions for the purpose of selective crystallisation to an aqueous solution of a (6RS)-diastereoisomer mixture of an alkali metal salt of 5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolic acid at a temperature of 5@C to 80@C until the pH has stabilised at a value in the range from 4.8 to 5.3, and separating off the resulting solid, namely (6S)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolic acid. (6S)-THF can be used as a starting material for the preparation of (6S)-N(5)-formyl-THF, (6S)-N(5)-methyl-THF and (6R)-N(5),N(10)-methylene-THF.
