The present invention relates to a chromate-free wood preservative containing at least one quaternary, water-soluble, fungicidal ammonium compound and/or at least one water-soluble, fungicidal diazonium dioxy compound as biocidal active ingredient. The wood preservative, which is ready for use, contains, per 100% by weight, 0.5 to 4% by weight of a pigment/surfactant/solvent mixture which contains, or is composed of, up to 0.1% by weight of at least one water-insoluble phthalocyanine pigment and/or azo pigment or bisazo pigment (based on dry pigment), up to 0.1% by weight of at least one surfactant or surfactant mixture, up to 0.3% by weight of at least one organochemical water-soluble solvent or solvent mixture, and water as the remainder.
