Aromatic polymer

Aromatic polymers comprise the repeat unit -Ph-Ph-Ph- where Ph represents paraphenylene, linked in the polymer chain to itself and/or to adjacent other repeat units by way of oxygen in a group containing up to 3 atoms in line. The polymer does not contain the unit -Ph-S-Ph-O-Ph-Ph-Ph-O-Ph-SO2-Ph-O A...

Summary:Aromatic polymers comprise the repeat unit -Ph-Ph-Ph- where Ph represents paraphenylene, linked in the polymer chain to itself and/or to adjacent other repeat units by way of oxygen in a group containing up to 3 atoms in line. The polymer does not contain the unit -Ph-S-Ph-O-Ph-Ph-Ph-O-Ph-SO2-Ph-O Alternatively the repeat unit, other than the p-terphenylene unit, contains a major proportion of an electron-withdrawing group. A process for preparing the polymer comprises reacting a dihydroxyaromatic component, comprising 4,4 sec -dihydroxy-p-terphenyl, with at least one difunctional halogen compound.
