Summary:A method and apparatus for severing a plurality of plies of a thermoplastic material and sealing the severed margins thereof is provided. The method comprises the steps of enveloping a hot wire for severing and sealing the thermoplastic material in an inert atmosphere, directing the inert atmosphere to impinge on a proximal portion of the thermoplastic material to be severed and sealed, and translating the hot wire toward the proximal portion of the thermoplastic material to sever the plurality of plies and seal the severed margins thereof. As a result, the severed margins are enveloped by the inert atmosphere impinging on the thermoplastic material.
