Summary:A catheter system (20) includes a stylus (26) having a first generally conically shaped end (48) tapering to a point and a second end, and a cannula (24) having an inside dimeter for slidably receiving the stylus (26) and an outside diameter. The cannula (24) has a first end (40) and a second end, and a catheter (22) has an inside diameter for slidably receiving the outside diameter of the cannula (24) and first and second ends. The second ends of the stylus (26), cannula (24) and catheter (22) includes a relative placement mechanism such that, when the stylus (26), cannula (24) and catheter (22) are assembled for insertion, the first end (48) of the stylus (26) projects from the first end (40) of the cannula (24). The first end of the catheter (22) includes a first end wall which is generally frustoconically shaped, the frustoconical shape of the first end wall of the catheter (22) being substantially coincident with the conical shape of the first end (48) of the stylus (26). The first end of the catheter (22) is adapted for insertion into a region of a wearer's body. The second end is adopted for access to the catheter (22) from outside the wearer's body. The catheter (22) includes a generally elliptical port (60) through its sidewall adjacent the first end. The major axis of the port (60) extends generally longitudinally of the catheter (22) and the minor axis of the port extends generally transversely of the catheter (22).
