Summary:A process for the preparation of esters of alpha -ketocarboxylic acids in which R to R are identical to or different from one another and can denote hydrogen or straight-chain or branched alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy and/or cycloalkyl radicals and/or halogen radicals and R stands for an unbranched lower alkyl radical, in which esters of glycidic acid of the formula in which R to R have the above meaning, are reacted in the presence of zeolites and/or phosphates and/or phosphonic acid or boric acid on a support material and/or acidic metal oxides as catalysts, and use of the esters of alpha -ketocarboxylic acids for the preparation of esters of phenylacetic acid.
