Summary:Sodium silicate solutions having an SiO2:Na2O weight ratio of 1.95 to 1.6:1 are prepared hydrothermally by reaction of sand, sodium hydroxide and water. The invention is characterised in that the sand is reacted in less than a stoichiometric amount compared with the 2:1 weight ratio of the batch and at temperatures between 190 and 240 DEG C.
